MEDIA RELEASE
Green lid recycling service in Northern Suburbs to resume tomorrow
The City of Cape Town is pleased to notify residents with green lid recycling bins that an interim arrangement has been made to resume weekly recycling collection in your neighbourhoods from 1 September 2022.
The award of the tender for the service this financial year (2022/23) was appealed, and the new permanent contractor cannot begin work until this appeal is resolved. Another contractor was initially arranged to perform the interim service from 1 July, but had to pull out of the arrangement for financial reasons, leading to service interruption for the past month until a second backup could be secured.
The City is currently in the process of appointing the second back-up via an RFQ process, but in the meantime has managed to repurpose internal resources to undertake the work. Recycling collection from green lid bins in the Northern Suburbs will now resume again from Thursday, 1 September 2022.
Because teams will need to collect and transport higher volumes of recyclable materials than usual (there is an expected backlog of recyclable materials to collect), it may not be possible to service all households initially on the scheduled day. If residents’ recycling is not collected on the scheduled day, green lid bins and any accumulated bags should be left out until 19h00 each day until collected.
Residents should also please note that if recycling is not out for collection when the truck goes past their property, they will need to retain recyclables on the property until the next week. The City cannot accommodate requests to double back on our collection routes at this time.
‘We thank residents for their patience and understanding while challenges with contractors are being resolved. Any inconvenience is sincerely regretted,’ said Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Waste Management, Alderman Grant Twigg.
