Rehoming of Abandoned Muscovy Ducks from Peperboom Park.

Conservation Initiative: Rehoming of Abandoned Muscovy Ducks from Peperboom Park.

We are excited to announce the launch of our first environmental project, aimed at restoring the ecological balance of Cape Town’s urban stormwater ponds. Over the years, Peperboom Park in Vredekloof has seen a significant increase in the population of domestic Muscovy ducks, introduced a few years ago. With the population now exceeding 60 birds, the impact on the local ecosystem and community has become a pressing concern.
The overpopulation of these domestic species has led to overgrazing, habitat degradation, and the displacement of indigenous species, compromising the health of the dam and surrounding areas. Additionally, the welfare of the ducks is at risk, as they face dangers such as traffic accidents, domestic predators, and diseases.
In collaboration with CapeNature, the Cape of Good Hope SPCA, the City of Cape Town, and Vredekloof CID, we are proud to undertake a pioneering effort. This project marks the first time that compassionate action will be applied to the rehoming of abandoned domestic birds at stormwater ponds. Our initiative will focus on the ethical and responsible rehoming of these ducks to suitable environments, while also promoting conservation-based solutions through community involvement and environmental education.
By rehoming the Muscovy ducks from Peperboom Park, we aim to restore the natural habitat, allowing indigenous species to thrive once more. So stay tuned for updates on how you can get involved and support this important conservation effort.
A special thanks to David van As for taking these stunning photos of the Muscovy ducks at Peperboom Park.
