Update on Long-Outstanding Reinstatements

Good News –  We received an email on Wednesday as follows:

“The reinstatement project has commenced and the contractor is busy with his contracts administration and should start with construction next week.

Please note that we prioritised the Vredekloof area on the top of the list.”

The following reinstatements for Vredekloof are on the list:

1. Bauhinia 6
2. Bauhinia 45/47
3. Esdoring 11
4. Koorsboom 17/18/23
5. Plataan 13
6. Corner of Vredekloof Way & De Bron
7. Wessel Lourens 75/77

Just to clarify again, all of the above are reinstatements following a water incident, which is different from a normal pothole. Reinstatements and potholes are attended to by different departments.

Hopefully we will see the construction vehicles start moving in from tomorrow 17 March 2025!

Mowing Tender

It is often challenging to align our supplementary lawn mowing with the City’s schedule. On February 7, we reached out to them to confirm when mowing would begin in Vredekloof. They informed us that it was scheduled for the last week of February or, at the latest, March 1. Based on this, we proceeded with some additional mowing in certain parks.

When we followed up on Monday, March 3, we learned that there was yet another issue with the current mowing contract and that a new tender would commence on April 1, 2025.

Fortunately, they have committed to using some of their internal teams in the meantime until the new tender takes effect. As you may have noticed, the internal team did start on Saturday.

Cleaning of ponds – Winter Preparedness Programme

The Wessel Lourens Dam has been completely overgrown for a few years now and it has only gotten worse every year. This is something we have been discussing with the City for many years, but there was always a budget problem or something else why it could never happen.

Last year we came very close. See the feedback of April, 19 2024:

“Our Winter Preparedness Programme is currently underway with the main emphasis on maintenance of stormwater infrastructure to ensure functionality ahead of the winter season. All ponds identified as urgent needs will be cleaned as part of this process, and the Wessel Lourens Pond, has been highlighted as one of our priorities.”  Unfortunately the rain caught up with them.

 February, 7 2025:

“Once the Purchase Order for the long boom excavator is released, it will commence in Vredekloof. In an effort to spend our limited hand cleaning budget wisely, the team will neaten the pond after the excavator is off site, rather than before and after.

We aspire to complete all the work before the end of March.”

March, 6 2025:

Edward informed me yesterday that the requested long boom excavator and trucks are booked. We await confirmation of the availability of an operator. We still aspire to complete all the work before the end of March.

Thanks for your proposal. We’ll have to work via Ysterhout Street.”

March, 12 2025:

We held a site meeting, and we should hopefully see the construction vehicles arrive within the next few days! However, rain is expected at some point next week.
